Stainless Steel vs Plastic in the Kitchen: What the Evidence Actually Shows

Plastic has become a kitchen staple. Spatulas, spoons, ladles, boards, containers — it's light, inexpensive, and easy to use.

But as these utensils age, their surface can scratch, warp, or gradually lose its original look. That raises a fair question: what actually happens when these materials are used for years in contact with food and heat?

The honest answer is nuanced.

Not all plastics behave the same way. The material's formulation, temperature, friction, length of use, and surface condition can all change how a utensil behaves over time.

Scientific research does show that some plastic kitchen utensils and materials can contribute to micro- and nanoplastics in food.   • wide range of shapes and colours;
  • well suited to certain specific uses.

It can be a genuinely good fit for some situations.

Silicone

  • easy handling;
  • a fit for moulds and flexible utensils.

It answers different needs from a rigid metal utensil.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel stands out mainly for:

  • rigidity;
